Roger Bannister…Gone But Not Forgotten
Bannister vs. Landy
“The Miracle Mile”
On August 7, 1954 during the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, B.C., England’s Roger Bannister and Australian John Landy met for the first time in the one mile run at the newly constructed Empire Stadium.
Roger Bannister was the first to break the 4 minute mile and John Landy, at the time, was the world record holder in the one mile run. This race would end in a miracle finish — Bannister would win on the final turn but Landy would hang in there at the finish. In the end, this race was the first one in history where both men would break the 4-minute barrier in the same race ! It would forever be known as “The Miracle Mile”.
